While California is a state that has a high cost of living and the overall tax environment isn’t necessarily friendly, there are many variables that favor this state as a retirement hotspot. First and foremost is the climate. There are some areas that can get hot (the deserts) and there are some cold and wet spots in the north, but mostly the weather is excellent year round.
There are also a few tax benefits, as all retirement benefits are exempt from Social Security taxes as well as some disability payments. Additionally, property taxes are capped to 1% of property value and those over 55 may also qualify for other property tax exceptions.
